So, let’s celebrate the ageless goddesses within us, as we embark on a vibrant adventure filled with health, joy, and a dash of mischief!
First Secret to Vibrant Living: Savor the Warmth of Cooked Foods
In Ayurveda, the choice of food, including whether to consume raw or cold foods, is closely tied to individual constitution (Prakriti), digestive capacity (Agni), and seasonal factors. Here’s why too many cold and raw foods may not be ideal for women over 50, especially as we age.
Before you dismiss the idea, let me explain.
Weakened Digestive Fire (Agni)
As we age, our digestive fire tends to diminish, making it harder for our bodies to break down and assimilate nutrients from raw or cold foods. Cooked foods are easier to digest and help stimulate Agni, promoting better absorption of nutrients.
Increased Vata Dosha
Aging is often associated with an increase in Vata dosha, which is characterized by qualities like dryness, coldness, and irregularity. Raw and cold foods can exacerbate these Vata qualities, leading to symptoms like bloating, gas, and discomfort.
Imbalance in Body Temperature
Cold foods can lower the body’s internal temperature, which is not ideal for digestion and overall health. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of maintaining a warm internal environment, especially in cooler seasons, to support bodily functions and prevent illnesses.
Impact on Circulation
Cold foods can constrict blood vessels and slow down circulation, which can be particularly detrimental as we age. Good circulation is essential for delivering nutrients to tissues and maintaining overall vitality.
Less Nutrient Availability
Cooking food often enhances its nutrient availability by breaking down cell walls, making vitamins and minerals easier to absorb. Raw foods, while healthy in their own right, may not provide the same level of nutrient accessibility for those with a weaker digestive system.
While raw and cold foods can be included in a balanced diet, Ayurveda suggests prioritizing cooked, warm meals, especially as we age. These foods support digestion, balance Vata, and help maintain overall health and vitality, allowing women over 50 to thrive in this exciting chapter of life.
Just keep these tips in mind—there’s no need to completely overhaul your eating habits! I get it; cold food and drinks can be tempting, especially when they offer a refreshing relief. Trust me, I’ve had my fair share of personal heat waves during menopause, when it felt like I had a mini fireplace igniting at the most inconvenient moments! Embracing warm foods doesn’t mean you have to give up the cool treats you love; it’s all about finding a balance that works for you.
